Hi Nina,
Our temperature really has moderated here today, thank goodness. ( -17 degree C= 1.4 degrees F). I have to admit when it is down around -30 life is just a bit tougher.
I was at a conference in Houston a couple of years ago and the temperature was in the 80s, but it was pouring! I didn't see much of the city except the mall across from the conference centre. Someday, we will visit Texas again, with time to explore.
As WG said, I do see some parallels between Texas and Alberta. Just not the weather.

Andi, you have mail!
Elsewhere, yeah, that is why I write the newsletter. I knew there was a good reason. Oh, yup,and I will bring my new camera too.
Jgnat, I wish I knew this person well enough to know her feelings. Perhaps by the summer golf tournament we will have a better feel about what we can to to make her most comfortable. Till then, we will treat her like any other good employee and see what happens.

Hi Shamus, Happy New Year! How is the skiing up there?
Ascot, no drunks at our party, at least not likely, and anyone who smokes goes outside to do so. A JW would be comfortable, if they wanted to be. It is up to her.

Thank you for that comment, Nowisee. We've done what we can for this year, and perhaps next year, if she is still with our company, we will make it a "Winter Gathering". As all of you have said, despite all the changes we make, ultimately, it is up to her.

Devon, I would be delighted if she wanted to come. We do discourage employees getting drunk because it just leads to complications and problems. You see, we are such a moderate, nice group that a JW would be quite safe and comfortable with us.....which is exactly why the Watchtower forbids it. Sigh...........

Andi! Lovely to hear from you. Oh yes, after all I have learned here on the forum, I expected that she would not want to come. So ironic that we, her worldly employers, are fussing and trying to make it possible (as much as is reasonable) for her to attend this social event, while she is likely looking down on us as "bad association". Oh well, much as I don't agree with it, she does have her right to follow her own religion.
It will be interesting to see how any other employees react if word does get out that her religion forbids her associating with non JWs. It is kind of a slap in the face, you know, and witnesses know it, which is why they usually make up some excuse why they are busy. I, however, don't want to do anything to make her life miserable. She doesn't make any trouble and does her work well. Her manager thinks she is a good employee, so I would prefer she stays happy on the job and with the company. Maybe she will see the nice side of normal people.
As regards to my daughter and her now ex boyfriend, ah, that was a drama. Check your inbox.

Thanks, everyone.
I passed on that quote to the other partners, Elsewhere, thank you.
Simon, I do feel sorry for her and I don't want to put any pressure on her either way. It is her decision. It is one of our business partners who is most concerned. He is a nice guy and and just wants this person to be able to come if she wants to..the question is whether she even really wants to.
Crinklestein, I agree with you on . At various times in the past we have had emplyees hint that they couldn't come for some good reason, so they should get a door prize, and we said no. I think to be consistant and fair, we need to stick to attendees only.

Thank you, everyone, for your feedback.
Lady Lee, it isn't a huge company, and we do try to make everyone feel comfortable, so yes, we generally have some vague idea why people can't come. If it is something we can help with, we do. For example, we have learned to schedule around Ukranian Christmas, because several employees celebrate that with their families.
Having said that, none of the other non-Christian employees have avoided coming in the past (no other JWs employed lately). We decided two years ago to change the name, since we have it in January, anyway.

Saintsatan, I kind of feel we have done what we could and at this point it is up to her. I agree with you.
Dustyb, I don't work directly with her and have never met her. I have no way of building a relatonship with her. However, I do wonder if the most honest thing would be to just ask her if the word "holiday" was not in the invitation, if it would have made a difference to her.
